Reader’s Question:

My drivers license has been suspended In Florida for thirty days because I accumulated more than 10 points in a year. Do I need to get an SR22 for this?

Sam

Clearwater FL
You might have to get SR-22 to to have your driver’s license reinstated in Florida after a suspension because of gathering too many points on your MVR.

You may already know exceeding beyond the allowable points total in the state of FL can get your license suspended. According to the The FL Department of Highway and Safety and Motor Vehicles (HSMV) there is a thirty day suspension for twelve points accumulated within 1 year.

Florida law demands motorists to hold Bodily Injury Liability (BIL) insurance along with Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and Property Damage Liability (PDL) coverages in some instances, such as when the motorist is found guilty of certain traffic infractions.

If you don’t have insurance to abide by the Financial Responsibility Law during the time exceeding beyond the points total, your driver license it will result to license suspension for up to three years. You will also need to pay a reinstatement fee of $15. Aside from that, you will need to show proof of liability insurance in the form of SR22. You need to carry SR22 car insurance for a period of 3 years to get your drivers license back.

According to SR22 Laws you have to keep file the SR22 with the state for a period of three years if you didn’t have Bodily Injury Liability as well as the state minimum requirements of PIP and PDL included in your auto insurance policy during the time which your points total surpass the amount permitted by law. To learn for sure the amount in your specific situation and if a SR-22 will be necessary to restore your license by the end of the one month suspension, consult the FL HSMV.

Reader’s Question:

I had been found guilty of DUI a couple of months ago and my new automobile insurance firm has stated absolutely nothing regarding a SR-22. I’ve always got full coverage on my automobile and wanted to ask whether you believe the SR-22 in Florida is necessary or not.

Mike

Cape Coral FL

An automobile insurance provider isn’t the one which requires an SR-22 to be maintained, it’s mandated by the courts or a state agency typically following specific traffic infraction such as DUI. State laws vary so it depends upon the state where you had been found guilty of a DUI if they require an SR22 to have your license reinstated or for some other reasons.

If you need to maintain an SR-22 in Florida then you need to be informed. When you have recently relocated or believe you might have overlooked this notification, you need to get hold of your local Department of Motor Vehicles to determine for sure if the financial responsibility certificate is required of you.

Since your DUI occured in Florida, if that is the situation, here’s more info on Florida’s financial responsibility law. According to The Florida Driver’s Handbook, this Financial Responsibility law requires motorists to hold bodily injury liability (BIL) insurance as well as the mandatory PIP and PDL coverages should they have been convicted of certain traffic infractions, which includes DUI or DWI.

If you also you don’t have car insurance to abide by the Financial Responsibility Law, your driver license will be suspended for 3 years. You will need to pay a $15 reinstatement fee and present the department  proof of financial responsibility or SR-22 in Florida for 3 years from the date of the suspension to have your license reinstated.

Reader’s Question:

I am planning to buy a motorcycle next month. I currently have an SR22 Florida insurance and I would like to know if I will be needing an additional insurance for the bike. Do I get a coverage for my bike with my SR22?

Jim

Miami FL
In case you have a non owners SR-22 Florida insurance and you have a motorcycle then its not necessary to get coverage on the bike unless of course you do not satisfy the other motorcycle insurance requirements such as:

1. Should put on head gear and;

2. Should be 21 years old and above

A motorbike insurance plan will have to be separate from your SR22 Florida automobile insurance policy. Additionally, when you have a lien holder on the motorcycle they might demand that you have comprehensive and collision coverage on your policy.

The simplest way to bring down your Motorcycle Insurance is to find car insurance companies and get a quote. To get quotes easily, you should get multiple quotes from comparison website where you will be given multiple quotes from different insurance companies. Reader’s Question:

I am looking to get a good motor insurance company here in Florida. Are there any tips that can help me in getting a good insurer?

Reggie

Orlando, FL

Usually, the main consideration most vehicle owners have in mind is the price of the van motor insurance policy. This is a practical consideration considering that van motor insurance Florida can be very expensive these days. You can get a cheap van motor insurance Florida by shopping thoroughly in the Internet.

However, a good van motor insurance Florida company is not just about offering the cheapest insurance premiums. You should also consider other factors such as the stability of the company, the customer service, and the way they process claims.

You cannot risk being with a van motor insurance company in Florida which is not financially stable. If you end up with a second-rate motor insurance company in your state, then you are not sure if the insurer can pay off your claims, in case you need one.

The customer service of a motor vehicle insurance company is also important. Your insurer should be manned by good customer support personnel who can assist you when you need to make claims.

You also want to be with an insurer which processes claims fast. You certainly don’t want to spend a lot of time processing your claims in the future.

Vehicle Insurance Question Jacksonville Florida FL

Reader’s Question:

A crippled war veteran asked me a favor to drive him around next week. In this case, who will then be responsible for the insurance? In case of an accident, what does an insurance policy typically covers? If the car is not insured or registered and I was asked to pull over by an officer, will I be ticketed because of this? If I’m drving someone else’s car and the car is insured, is it true that the insurance company covers the bare minumum in an accident?

Arthur

Jacksonville, FL

If your vetaran friend has a car insurance and you got an accident while driving his car, the insurance on the vehice would be primary and the if the limit is not high enough to pay the damages, your insurance as the driver would be secondary. Auto insurance companies follow this vehicle first and driver second.

The owner of the car should ensure that you will be covered under their current policy if you would drive him around as they want. Though most of the auto insurance companies can cover friends and people who would occasionally drive the owner’s car, there are certain exclusions so the owner should explain the situation to the insurance company to ensure that you will be covered on the policy for this case.

A basic liability policy which is required in most states covers injuries and damage to properties of the third party but not the vehicle driven if the driver is at fault. Collision would also be need. The owner of the vehicle should ensure that liability and collision coverages are extended to the driver of the vehicle. This is just one of the many other types of auto
insurance policies.

What insurance will be extended or transferred to the driver of the vehicle that is borrowed depends upon the guidelines of the insurance policy, the state insurance laws and the owner’s insurance policy. The owner of the vehicle should check this matter to his insurance comapany.

It is illegal to drive a vehicle without a registration or an insurance. State laws differs in that some would give ticket to the vehicle, thus the owner, while others give ticket to driver because of driving an unregistered or uninsured vehicle. In other states, the discretion is upon the law enforcement officer who asked the driver to pull over.

Vehicle Insurance Renewal Cape Coral Florida FL

Reader’s Question:

I am planning to get insurance in Cape Coral, Florida for my vehicle. Do I have to register my car in Florida also? My vehicle is registered in Kentucky. My current car insurance carrier informed me that since I moved here in Cape Coral, they cannot renew my car insurance.

John

Cape Coral, FL

Yes, your vehicle has to be registered in the state of Florida since it seems that you have moved in Cape Coral FL permanently. The Florida Department of Motor Vehicles states that an automobile is required by law to be registered within 10 days of the vehicle owner becoming either placing children in public school, being employed or becoming a resident. If you are past the ten day law on registering a vehicle and the state finds out about it there could be some fees added to the car registration cost.

Florida law require FL auto insurance also. Only insurance countersigned or issued by a FL car insurance company is electronically reported to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles for verification purposes.

Cheapest DUI Auto Insurance Jacksonville Florida FL

Reader’s Question:

I received a ticket for intoxicated driving and I am 22 years old and was wondering about how much my vehicle insurance will go up in Jacksonville Florida?

Alice

Jacksonville, FL

Intoxicated driving is considered a serious offense by insurance carriers and thus makes you more of a risk to them which will then cause your car insurance rates to increase. An individual that drives while intoxicated is more likely to have an accident than an individual that do not.

The Illinois Secretary of State, a driving under the influence (DUI) can subject you to high-risk car insurance rates for 3 years. According to the Illinois SOS DUI Fact Book high risk insurance for an individual convicted of a DUI averages an additional (over their normal auto insurance costs) $1500 per year.

With a major violation like this on your driving record and the needing to file a SR-22 car insurance you may not be able to find automobile insurance with a standard insurance company. Generally, a standard insurance company will provide better car insurance rates for those with clean driving history and may not offer competitive rates for those with DUI and other serious related offenses or bad driving history.

The best way to find the cheapest rates after you have been convicted of a DUI is to shop around and comparison shop here to get reasonable quotes in Jacksonville Florida.

Make sure you ask for any insurance discounts that are available to you such as safety features on your vehicle, anti-theft devices, traffic courses or driver improvement, etc.

Reader’s Question:

My motorcycle is registered in Delray Beach Florida. I am wondering if I go to another state with my motorcycle that require insurance, can I still have problems if I get pulled over by law enforcement even though it does not require that you have motorcycle insurance in Florida?

James

Delray Beach, FL

Yes, you can have problems if you drive your Florida registered uninsured motorcycle in a different state that require motorcycles carry insurance on them.

When you visit other states you are mandated to follow their insurance laws and if carrying auto insurance on a motorcycle is one such law you need to abide by it. If one has car insurance on a bike normally it will conform to the laws of other states that you drive in so you will be covered and therefore another state does not cite you for operating without insurance on your out of state registered car. But if they require car insurance and you fail to provide one, thus in their eyes may not be able to pay for damages you may do to another party, you can be ticketed driving without insurance.

Keep in mind while motorcycle insurance is not required to register a motorcycle in Delray Beach Florida if a motorcycle operator is charged in an accident with injuries, then the owner/operator is financially liable for bodily injuries and property damage to others.

Comprehensive Auto Insurance Florida FL

Reader’s Question:

I would like to know if a broken windshield covered under my car insurance policy deductible?

John

Coral Springs, FL

In most states you have to buy Comprehensive coverage that has Full Glass or Full Windshield Coverage in the deductible section. In some states do not offer this at all. In Florida it includes windshield coverage when Comprehensive coverage is bought regardless of the deductible option chosen. Under most situations your front windshield is covered if you have full insurance coverage.

The term full coverage typically includes collision and comprehensive coverage.

In some states, with full coverage you do not have a deductible for the front windshield, but all other windows are subject to the deductible.

If you only have liability insurance on your car you will have to pay out of your own pocket for the replacement of your windshield, since it is not covered by your car insurance policy.

I live in Davie Florida and I do not have a vehicle or auto insurance. My dad is giving me his vehicle. My father lives in Michigan and that is where the vehicle is currently registered and insured. What so I have to do to insure and register the car here?

Don

It would sound that you have a FL license, which will help you obtain car insurance and register the vehicle in your resident in Davie, FL. The FL Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (HSMV) lists exactly how to register a vehicle in this state.

When registering a car in FL you need to submit the original title and proof of FL insurance to the license plate agency or local county tax collector. FL insurance means that the insurance policy has been issued in FL by an insurance carrier licensed by the FL Department of Insurance to do business in Florida.

You need registration to obtain car insurance but you need insurance to obtain a registration.
