Reader’s Question:

I am planning to get auto insurance in Cape Coral, Florida for my vehicle. Do I have to register my car in Florida also? My vehicle is registered in Kentucky. My current car insurance carrier informed me that since I moved here in they cannot renew my car insurance.

John

Cape Coral, FL

Yes, your vehicle has to be registered in the state of Florida since it seems that you have moved in Cape Coral FL permanently. The Florida Department of Motor Vehicles states that an automobile is required by law to be registered within 10 days of the vehicle owner becoming either placing children in public school, being employed or becoming a resident. If you are past the ten day law on registering a vehicle and the state finds out about it there could be some fees added to the car registration cost.

Florida law require FL auto insurance also. Only insurance countersigned or issued by a FL car insurance company is electronically reported to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles for verification purposes.
